Set up an AI assistant for everyday life

Let's do this one step at a time. Tick them off as you go.
  1. Choose one main assistant
Start with one general assistant and learn it well. Popular choices with free plans include Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.

  2. Install the app on your phone
Download the same assistant's official app from the App Store or Google Play and sign in with the same account. Your chats then follow you between phone and computer.
  3. Turn on two-step sign-in
Protect the account with two-step verification in its security settings. Your chat history is personal, so treat it like your email.
  4. Review the privacy settings
Look for settings that control whether your conversations can be used to improve the service, and for memory or personalisation. Choose what you are comfortable with.
  5. Tell it how you like answers
Use the custom instructions or personalisation setting to say how you like replies: short or detailed, your country and units, and anything it should always keep in mind.
  6. Try three everyday jobs
Ask it to plan a week of meals around what's in your fridge, draft a reply to a tricky message, and explain a confusing letter in plain English. Check anything important against the original.
